Candace Stewart has dedicated her career to advocating for the elderly. She served as a Washoe County SAFE (Special Advocate for Elders) volunteer, and more recently, served on the Board of Directors for the Senior Service Network of Northern Nevada. She has volunteered to create and facilitate many support groups throughout California and Nevada over the past 20 years. She has worked in long term care facilities, where she created and implemented a program for residents with mild to moderate cognitive impairment, as well as worked for home care agencies, where she trained caregivers on Alzheimer’s and dementia, and created person-centered care plans for clients. She has just facilitated an 8 week session of the very first NEVADA Early Stage Support Group, and will be continuing with the next 8 week session.
Ms. Stewart worked in the office of the Long Term Care Ombudsman in Ventura County, California, ensuring that elders were treated with respect, dignity and compassion. She also worked with the Alzheimer’s Association of Ventura County as the Chapter Manager, working with volunteers, and was the voice on the other end of the phone for the Helpline.
Ms. Stewart knows firsthand the challenges facing families of loved ones with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease; two of her family members were diagnosed with the illness, including her mother.
Her personal and professional experience prompted her to write a book, “Welcome to Planet Alzheimer’s”. It is short, to the point, and easily read, regarding communicating with someone who has Alzheimer’s, with a little laughter and love added in. It has sold more than 15,000 copies nationwide. Ms. Stewart is available for workshops and presentations on such topics as The Dementias, and communication techniques based on her book.
Ms. Stewart has a degree in Behavioral Science and Psychology.
Her fee schedule is on a sliding scale. To find out what Ms. Stewart can offer your community, please contact her for further information.

“…and after caring for 4 members of my family with dementia, I would like to thank you for your contribution to the care of our loved ones with this sad condition. Our tools are love, laughter and information.”
“…and I am caring for my aunt who has been disguising the illness for many years. She has been physically injured, hospitalized, and been financially abused as well. The first page of your book is just what I needed. She has been taken to Planet Alzheimer’s against her will. Now I can let go of the baggage and just love and care for her. Thank you, you may have saved me from a stroke! The stress was getting to me.”
“Thank you for writing such a book. I wanted one for each of my five children because it is so informative. My husband has Alzheimer’s…”
“I learned of your book at a support group meeting in the nursing home where my 95 year old mother lives. It is short and to the point and very easy to read and understand. Thank you for taking the time to write such a book.”
“Your book has been a huge help to my friend and her family. Her 86 year old husband has Alzheimer’s. In this stage, he goes from “okay” to “absurd”. Your choice of words is so very correct. Thank you for giving your time and energy to help others who must make this journey.”
“…and thank you for the book “Planet Alzheimer’s. Now that my husband is in a facility, it will help everyone understand when they visit. I also gave a copy to the Director.”
“This is my third order for your book. I still think you should expand each of the ten rules into 20 pages each and you would have a 200 page bestseller!”
“…just thank you. Great book!”
“What a wonderful little book, that is so big on information. Thank you so much.”
“I have just returned to Planet Earth after being with my dear mother who is slowly losing her mind. I detest this disease and what it has done and is doing to us all. I have 3 brothers who will be receiving your book. Thank God for our sense of humor.”
“…you have certainly achieved your goals with this book. I will be handing them out at our caregiver support groups, Memory Clinics and health-education events. Thanks again.”
After facilitating caregiver support groups for years, and seeing families going through the trauma of trying to communicate with the person who has Alzheimer’s, in its various stages, I began to try to think of a way to explain why the person with the disease cannot communicate as they once did. They just cannot. Sometimes it seems like this person is doing things on purpose, just to aggravate the caregiver. But truly, the communication process as we know it no longer exists. It’s almost like…like the person has gone to another planet. Planet Alzheimer’s. And on this planet, there are certain rules that must be followed.
And that’s where the idea for this book came from. Trying to explain to loved ones how to successfully communicate with someone who has Alzheimer’s disease, so that person doesn’t get angry and defensive, and is allowed to save face regarding their continuing inability to remember things.
This is a technique, and practice makes perfect. I’m hoping that this information will help you when you are visiting that person in your life who has Alzheimer’s Disease.
When you travel to see them on the planet they are now on. Welcome to Planet Alzheimer’s.
